Kawhi Leonard was supposed to be on his way back to Toronto in one of the wildest full-circle moves we’ve seen in a while. Instead, his trade is stuck in limbo, or as some Spanish outlets perfectly put it, “el traspaso se congela” — the trade is frozen. So what’s actually going on here?

To understand the freeze, you’ve got to rewind to September 2025. ESPN reported that the LA Clippers allegedly worked around the NBA salary cap by routing a $28 million payment to Kawhi through a third party. That kind of move, if true, would be a massive no-no under league rules. The NBA responded by opening a formal investigation into whether the Clippers bent (or broke) the cap to keep their star happy and paid.

The Clippers and Kawhi both denied any wrongdoing, saying everything was above board. But once the league starts digging, it doesn’t just shrug and walk away. That investigation has been hanging over the franchise ever since, and now it’s crashed right into the middle of what should’ve been a feel-good reunion story.

The trade back to Toronto — and why it’s stuck

Fast forward to late June 2026. Multiple outlets — from the LA Times to the AP to the Washington Post — reported that a deal was in place to send Kawhi back to the Toronto Raptors. The same city where he delivered that 2019 title, that bouncing Game 7 shot, that one-year-and-done legend status. From a storyline angle, it’s perfect: veteran Kawhi returning to the scene of his greatest run.

But here’s the catch: the trade can’t be finalized until the NBA finishes its investigation into the Clippers’ alleged cap circumvention. If the league finds serious violations, it could impact what assets the Clippers are allowed to move, potential penalties, or even the validity of past contracts. So for now, the paperwork is basically on ice while the lawyers, accountants, and league officials sort it out.
